About Inner Angle
Integrated Driving Therapy for Anxiety & Panic in Sussex
You can know how to drive — and still not feel safe
For years, I taught people how to drive.
And many of them were capable.
They understood the road. They could control the car.
But when anxiety showed up — at a junction, in traffic, on faster roads —
everything changed.
They didn’t need another explanation.
They didn’t need more instruction.
They needed support with what was happening inside them.
That’s the point where I realised something important:
The traditional techniques I had weren’t enough to support people through those moments.
So I trained as a counsellor —
not to step away from the car,
but to be able to support both the driving and the anxiety, at the same time.
The moment everything became clear
I began to see the same pattern again and again:
People weren’t struggling because they couldn’t drive.
They were struggling because their nervous system was overwhelmed.
As an instructor, I could teach the how.
But when someone froze at a junction…
or felt the urge to escape the car completely…
I realised something uncomfortable:
I didn’t have the tools to truly help them through that moment.
At the same time, traditional therapy — while valuable — happened somewhere else.
A quiet room. A conversation.
But driving anxiety doesn’t live there.
It shows up on the road. In real time.
And I couldn’t find anyone bringing both together.
I didn’t leave the car — I changed how I worked within it
I trained as a professional counsellor because I didn’t want to keep sitting beside people in those moments without knowing how to guide them through it.
Not just understanding anxiety —
but helping someone move through it safely, while it’s happening.
Today, I’m both:
- a qualified counsellor
- and a government-approved driving instructor
So when you’re in the car with me, we’re not separating things.
We’re working with:
- what’s happening on the road
- and what’s happening inside you
at the same time.
The Inner Angle Approach
Instead of a “method”, think of this as how we work together:
- When anxiety rises, we regulate it together
- When your thoughts spiral, we ground them
- When avoidance shows up, we approach it gently
We move in small, manageable steps —
from quiet roads to more challenging situations —
at a pace your nervous system can handle.
This isn’t about pushing through fear.
It’s about learning that you can stay — and be okay.
What “Inner Angle” means
Inner Angle is about the small shifts that change direction.
Not forcing yourself through fear —
but learning how to stay with it, safely.
A steadier breath.
A moment where you don’t pull away at a junction.
A response that feels just slightly more in your control.
Those moments build something real.
The car becomes a place where that change can happen —
because it’s where the anxiety already lives.
A different kind of safety
Integrated Awareness: Balancing what’s happening on the road with what’s happening inside you.
Safety-First Support: Monitoring the road as an ADI while simultaneously monitoring your nervous system as a Counsellor.
Real-Time Grounding: Techniques to stop a panic spike before it takes over.
Graded Exposure: Moving from the driveway to the quiet road to the junction in "micro-steps."
The Dual-Lens Approach: A unique combination of psychological depth and physical road safety.
We stay with it — together.
Why this approach matters
If you’ve been struggling with driving anxiety, panic attacks, or avoidance,
you may already have tried to push through it.
And it hasn’t quite worked.
That’s not a failure.
It’s a mismatch.
You don’t need more pressure.
You need the right kind of support, in the right place.
If this feels familiar
You don’t have to commit to anything straight away.
You can start with a simple conversation.
A space to talk through what’s been happening —
and see if this approach feels right for you.
