Driving Anxiety & Phobia Therapy Sussex | Overcome Fear of Driving
Specialist support from an ADI & Integrative Counsellor to help you reclaim your independence.
If driving feels like a battle with your nervous system, you aren't alone. Whether it’s highway panic, a fear of bridges, or avoidance after an accident, standard lessons often aren't enough because they teach skills, not emotional regulation.

What is Driving Therapy?
Driving Therapy is a therapeutic approach that takes place in the car, combining counselling with real-time emotional exploration. Instead of reflecting on experiences after they’ve happened, we work with your thoughts, reactions, and feelings as they arise in the driving environment.
Driving naturally activates our internal world — anxiety, self-doubt, control, frustration, avoidance, confidence, belief systems, and relational patterns. During Driving Therapy, we use these moments as opportunities to gain insight, practise emotional regulation, and build confidence in a safe, supported way.
The Safety Net: Why This Works
I bridge the gap between a driving instructor and a therapist.
Psychological Safety: A qualified Integrative Counsellor using trauma-informed techniques (DBT-informed) to keep you within your "Window of Tolerance."
Physical Safety: My experience as an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) using a dual-controlled vehicle. I hold the physical risk so you can focus on the work.
Your 3-Step Journey to Confidence
Initial Discussion (Online): A secure space to explore your history, answer your questions, and build a plan, (no driving required).
Preparation (Online or In-Car): We build your toolkit of regulation skills. You learn how to stay calm before the engine starts.
Real-Time Exposure (In-Car): We move to the road at your pace. We pause to process emotions and practice new habits in the actual environment where they happen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What happens if I panic and lose control of the car?
A: This is the most common fear, and I am fully prepared for it. As an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) with years of experience, I have full dual controls (brake and clutch) on my side. I constantly monitor the road and your reactions. If you panic, I can take full control of the vehicle instantly to keep us safe. You are never left to "handle it" alone.
Q: Do I have to drive in the first session?
A: No. We move at your pace. We start with an online discussion to build a plan. For the first in-car session, we may spend the entire time parked, working on regulation techniques, or just driving around a quiet car park. We only move to busier roads when your nervous system is regulated and ready.
Q: How is this different from a normal refresher lesson?
A: A driving instructor teaches you how to drive (skills). I help you understand why you are afraid (psychology). We use therapeutic techniques (informed by DBT and integrative counselling) to rewire your brain's response to danger. It is therapy that takes place in a car, not just a driving lesson.
Q: Can I use my own car?
A: To ensure maximum safety and allow you to fully relax into the therapeutic process, we use my dual-controlled training vehicle for the initial sessions. Once you have regained confidence and regulation, we can discuss transitioning to your own vehicle.
